چکیده

We investigate if well-known LGN ion channel properties can facilitate information-theoretic optimal coding through temporal decorrelation; and if so, whether the degree of temporal decorrelation can be adapted dynamically to ensure such optimization at longer time scales. Signi cant temporal decorrelation for time lags above 50 ms is achievable in a LGN cell model with inputs generated from natural visual stimuli. Dynamic decorrelation is obtainable through adaptive temporal ltering by varying the resting membrane potential. We conclude that the biophysical properties of LGN cells support the role of temporal decorrelation and enable a plausible feedback control mechanism that dynamically adapt to changes in input statistics.

Temporal Decorrelation: A Theory of Lagged and Nonlagged Responses in the Lateral Geniculate Nucleus

Natural time-varying images possess signi cant temporal correlations when sampled frame by frame by the photoreceptors. These correlations persist even after retinal processing and hence, under natural activation conditions, the signal sent to the lateral geniculate nucleus is temporally redundant or ine cient. We explore the hypothesis that the LGN is concerned, among other things, with improv...

The impact of the lateral geniculate nucleus and corticogeniculate interactions on efficient coding and higher-order visual object processing

Principles of efficient coding suggest that the peripheral units of any sensory processing system are designed for efficient coding. The function of the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) as an early stage in the visual system is not well understood. Some findings indicate that similar to the retina that decorrelates input signals spatially, the LGN tends to perform a temporal decorrelation. Ther...

Histological and Biochemical Alterations in the Superior Colliculus and Lateral Geniculate Nucleus of Juvenile Rats Following Prenatal Exposure to Marijuana Smoke

Prenatal exposure to marijuana has been associated with a variety of brain deficits, as Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), its main active ingredient crosses the placenta and affects foetal brain development. Despite this effect, marijuana remains a commonly abused substance among pregnant women. In the current study, we examined the histological and biochemical changes in the superior colliculus (...

The dynamic spatio-temporal behavior of visual responses in thalamus and cortex.

Due to eye and object movements the visual world changes on a rather fast time scale and the neuronal network of the primary visual pathway has to immediately react to these changes. Accordingly the neuronal activity patterns in the visual thalamus and cortex show a pronounced dynamic behavior which reenters the circuitry such that the actual cell responses are also guided by the activation his...

The multifunctional lateral geniculate nucleus.

Providing the critical link between the retina and visual cortex, the well-studied lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) has stood out as a structure in search of a function exceeding the mundane 'relay'. For many mammals, it is structurally impressive: Exquisite lamination, sophisticated microcircuits, and blending of multiple inputs suggest some fundamental transform. This impression is bolstered ...
